Save The Only Earth We Have

Save The Only Earth We Have

Square or round, Earth is the only planet that we have and the only one that we can reside in. That is why we have to protect it, not just for our sakes but for the future generations as well. Each year, we pledge to make Earth a better place by doing our part on Earth Day, like switching off all electronic devices and unnecessary power – at least during Earth Hour.

While pledging to save Earth on Earth Day is a laudable concerted effort, we cannot keep the saving work to a one-day only affair. For instance, do you know how Earth Day came about?

WAR TIME

It started as Arbor Day, back in 1872, when J. Sterling Morton proposed that Nebraska citizens set aside a day to plant trees. The first official Earth Day picked its pieces from Arbor Day in 1970 to become a widespread movement in America where millions protested against deteriorating environmental conditions. Locally, Dr Goh Keng Swee also launched a Tree Planting Day on 7 November 1971 – a day that went on for about 20 years before it was renamed, Clean and Green Week, for a more expansive environmental dedication. We saw the need to do more than planting trees, as our home conditions were not improving.

If you think that Earth’s ‘health condition’ is not as bad as we put it, just look at the issues closer to home. For example, the yearly haze that we face due to burning of plantations, China’s daily fog from vehicular exhaustion, or even India’s Ganges River that was subjugated by pollution.
